A Head Like A Lady

by Snaffles

Goutelette, Open Edition Print

Paper Size: 8 x 11 ins / 21 x 28 cm

This fine print shows Snaffles at his very best as a horse artist. The main scene shows a majestic heavyweight hunter galloping on, with a vignette depicting the horse disappearing through a fence. Important to the appeal of the piece is Snaffles wry appraisal of the Sparrow-catchin sort: A head like a lady a farewell like a cook. Like the famous print A National Candidate, this print was taken from the 1932 series Osses and Obstacles. The series should not be confused with the 1935 book of the same name, which was illustrated by Snaffles. At this point in his career, Snaffles was enjoying success in ever greater measure. By the late 1920s, he had developed his own distinctive style as an artist, with the influence of others becoming less and less apparent. Between 1928 and 1943 he produced a succession of first-rate prints, which met with great acclaim; many consider that it was during this period that he produced his finest work.
