A plump gamebird, the red-legged partridge is an introduced species that seems to have settled here with little problem. It can be spotted in its favoured open scrub and farmland habitats.
Scientific name
Alectoris rufa
Thorburn was famed for his watercolours of Game birds. This covey of `Red-Legged Partridge` is a fine example of his work. In `British Birds` published in 1915 which Thorburn both wrote and illustrated, he comments that `Partridge feed in the morning and about noon, may generally be seen dusting their plumage in some sunny spot on the stubbles or on dry banks`. The beautiful plumage of the birds is described with exquisite command of his watercolour medium and Thorburn captures the stance and habits of his subjects from the alert male Partridge to the bird asleep to his right.
