Morning, or The Benevolent Sportsman

by George Morland

Print from an Engraving

Paper Size: 25 x 30 ins / 63 x 76 cm

Image Size: 19 x 24 ins / 48 x 60 cm

First published by Grozer at 8, Castle Street, Leicester Fields, in May 1795 and reissued by an unnamed publisher in October 1903. In Morland’s time, village life was changing radically. There had always been a sharp distinction between town and country; but now, with a rapidly increasing population and with traditional village occupations being drawn townwards, there was an even more emphatic division between rich and poor. This print may be seen as symbolic of that widening rift. It is a companion piece to Evening, or the Sportsman’s Return
