Published by William Spooner, 377 Strand, on 10th November 1840. Battue shooting entails beaters driving the birds from cover to a point where sportsmen are stationed to shoot them. This print is interesting not only as an historical record of sporting activity but also from a compositional point of view: it is highly decorative and the flat, patterned effect is almost like that of an Oriental carpet or a Chinese landscape painting
