Ptarmigans are possibly Britain’s toughest birds and live in the cold, harsh mountains of Scotland. The ptarmigan is a plump gamebird, slightly larger than a grey partridge.
Ptarmigans are masters of camouflage, changing their colour to suit the season. In summer, a brown and yellow plumage blends the ptarmigan into the lichen covered rocks, while in winter, they are completely white except for a short black tail, they are the only birds in Britain to turn completely white.
The beautiful foliage in this painting depicts shoots, leaves, leaf buds, berries and these are the ptarmigans source of food
watermarks do not appear on actual prints
