As can be seen from George Morland’s picture of the dogs of two centuries ago, Setters were originally white and red. Pure Red Setters did not appear until the 19th century. On scenting their quarry, these dogs freeze and then drop to the ground, or ‘set’. Binks seems to be endowing the animals with human social habits, much as his eminent forerunner Edwin Landseer frequently did.
