This is a fine example of Snaffless work, showing what appears to be a huntsman prior to a Point-to-Point race, with horses and spectators mingling and with a charming vignette in the background. Military Point-to-Points and Steeplechases, especially those held at Sandown, were regularly attended by Snaffles and provided one of his favourite painting subjects. Right from the start of his career, Snaffles made his name with images of this kind, including, perhaps most famously, the series of four medium-sized prints entitled Hunting Types, with the titles The Gent with Osses to Sell, Blood and Quality, Old Tawney and Hogany Tops. Snaffless life was profoundly changed by the publication of Hunting Types. The set was an immediate success and Snaffles and his two sisters had to work frantically in a bid to colour the prints quickly enough to keep up with demand. Subsequent drawings, sketches and caricatures of this kind owed a great deal to the success of this early series
