Here Come The Hounds

by William J. Shayer Jnr

Paper Size: 21 x 22 ins / 53 x 56 cm

Image Size: 16 x 17 ins / 40 x 43 cm

These are hand printed from plates and coloured by hand.

One of four, published by Arthur Ackermann, 191 Regent Street, on 1st October 1877. This was originally a set of six episodes of the hunt. The missing scenes are “Run to Earth” and “Gone Away”. The circle format is unusual among sporting prints, though certainly not without precedent in the history of art: circular paintings (tondi) were quite common in Italian Renaissance art; there are examples of Dutch 17th-century landscapes in this form; and, nearer home, the painter Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893), friend of the Pre-Raphaelites, chose to compose his famous “The Last of England” within a near-circle
