One of a pair published by the Arts Reproduction Company, 3-4 Plough Court, Fetter Lane, London EC4. The publication is not dated, but the fact that the plates are photogravure means that it can have been no earlier than the 1890s, when Hardy was in mid-career. Photogravure in its early years was used exclusively for the reproduction of original paintings and it performed this function so faithfully, as can be seen from the reproduced brush-marks in these two prints, that the livelihood of the hand-engravers was threatened. However, photogravure plates still need to be printed by hand. This is done in exactly the same way as for hand-engraved plates except that a slightly thinner ink is used
watermarks do not appear on prints
