The pointers are shown in the characteristic pose these dogs adopt on scenting game. The key role of the pointer is to find game on the ground and then ‘stand’ or ‘come to point’, whilst taking care not to distress thegame until the sportsman comes within shooting distance. Binks seems to be endowing the animals with human social habits, much as his eminent forerunner Edwin Landseer frequently did.
