Francis Powell Hopkins (1830-1915) was born in Cambridge and educated at Rugby School. He discovered golf late in his life when he moved to Devon. He had no formal art training but soon gained a reputation as a competent artist, particularly in his portrayal of golfing scenes. He painted in both oil and watercolour and often signed as ‘Major S’ or ‘Shortspoon’.His images are highly evocative of the period and originals are virtually unobtainable
