The ubiquitous top hat was the normal headgear for cricketers in the early part of the 19th century. The wicket, which had originally been like miniature goal-posts a foot high and two feet wide, was superseded in the late 18th century by the three stumps and bails. Linked to this was the development of the straight bat (which, as early prints show, was once curved, rather like a hockey stick).
