Spaniels are an ancient breed going back at least six hundred years. Various types of spaniel have been bred for different kinds of work, Cockers appearing early in the 19th century. Cockers were originally black, but other varieties, red and white for instance, have been developed. The name Cocker may have come about through the use of these dogs for hunting woodcock. Binks seems to be endowing the animals with human social habits, much as his eminent forerunner Edwin Landseer frequently did
