High Leicestershire

by Snaffles (Charles Payne)

Goutelette, Open Edition Print

Paper Size: 8 x 11 ins / 21 x 28 cm

This is a delightful hunting scene by Snaffles, among the most popular sporting artists in history. Snaffles hunted keenly from an early age, and his understanding of field sports combined with his sharp wit to give his work an endearing, authentic quality that has ensured it remains prized by collectors to this day. This print, showing a lady riding side-saddle jumping a hedge head on, with a violet in her lapel, was originally issued in 1913. This was a time of increasing success and prosperity in Snaffles life: by September 1911, he had earned enough from his drawings and paintings to pay the £25 required to buy himself out of the Army. The following year brought ever greater exposure of his work, largely through a number of prints published in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. However, in the summer of 1912 he suffered a bad fall at the Leicestershire Yeomanry corps camp, which, while it did not end his hunting days, was to prevent him from fighting in the First World War. Nonetheless, Snaffles lost none of his tremendous energy, and 1913 saw him make his first visit to Ireland, as well completing a long series of Hunting Types
