This painting of the paddock at Royal Ascot in 2002 was especially painted in Jubilee year for The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charity Trust.

Royal Ascot in bright sunshine is a spectacular scene, since the crowd is always vast and the constantly-moving throng in its highly-coloured outfits presents a real challenge to the artist. Integral to Royal Ascot are the Royal colours and Peter Curling has included a Royal runner, watched by the Royal party, in the foreground of the picture.

Technically, this painting was a very difficult one to work. Green is the artist’s nightmare and Peter Curling has used chrome yellows to try to capture the brightness of the grass yet, at the same time, to prevent it from jumping out of the picture. He also used three different types of white to accentuate the solidity of the figures in the foreground. With one notable exception, none of the figures are meant to be identifiable, although there may be one or two who might be suggested!
