Lloyd Ruby, Bardahl Eagle Ford, 1966, Idianapolis 500
Lloyd Ruby is often described as the greatest driver never to win the Indy 500. In 1966 he joined Dan Gurney, Joe Leonard and Jerry Grant on the All American Racers team. Mario Andretti was black flagged for leaking oil and Lloyd Ruby took second place from Parnelli Jones on lap 35, leaving the race between Jim Clark and Ruby. Lloyd Ruby took the lead when Jim Clark spun on lap 64 and opened up a 50 second lead on second place. His final drive to victory was halted on lap 147 when he was black flagged with a smoking engine and, having lead the race for a total of 68 laps, after a long pit stop, finished in 11th place.
