The English artist F. Gordon Crosby, who was born in 1883, is probably the best known motoring artist of his generation.

He is also the most easily identifiable, due to a stunning technique which endowed his work with immense energy, power, movement and atmosphere. There is no doubt that his technique fitted the subject matter perfectly.

Crosby’s work was used extensively to illustrate the magazine, “The Autocar”, to provide readers with a vivid sense of the races and racing cars of the day. Terence Cuneo said of Crosby’s work: “Crosby had a tremendous verve. You could smell his cars and hear the exhausts. Nobody else ever managed to get what he could out of drawing or painting when it came to cars.”

Gordon Crosby died in 1943.
