Ansdell (1815-1885) was an animal painter whose work closely resembles that of Edwin Landseer. Like Landseer, he recorded many scenes of sporting life in England and in the Highlands of Scotland. These two pictures may be seen almost as icons of the game-hunting of the two countries, each presided over by the custodial figure of the indigenous gamekeeper
