The Turnberry Hotel, in Scotland’s south west Ayrshire coast, was built at the turn of the century and has maintained its tradition of Edwardian elegance.

The inaugural Open Golf Championship of 1977 culminated in the now historical shoot-out between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, with Watson the eventual winner. In that Turnberry is beyond compare is probably best summed up in a tribute by Henry Longhurst, by saying that, in those long periods inseparable from wartime service, when there is nothing to do but sit and think, I used often to find myself sitting and thinking of the time when once again we might be playing at Turnberry.

Who then could believe that 32 years after Watson’s celebrated victory over Nicklaus in 1977 that he would be again in the frame to win! A missed putt on the 18th in the final round denied Watson a popular victory and, tiring, he went on to lose a play-off to Stewart Cink
