the 17th at St Andrews famously known as the notorious ‘road hole’. An old turnpike road forms the hole’s southern boundary

There are several courses on the links at St Andrews but the most famous is undoubtedly The Old Course, which hosted the Open Championship for the 27th time in 2005. The Old Course is notorious for its huge double greens, where the outward and inward holes both make use of the same putting surface, and its 112 bunkers, amongst them some of the most famous in golf. The seventeenth hole is a very long par 4, covering 461 yards from the Medal Tee. Considered the most difficult hole on the course, it takes its name from the old turnpike road marking the hole’s southern boundary which has destroyed many championship rounds and from the formidable “Road” bunker. It is perhaps the most famous hole in golf.
