Red Rum was not bred for chasing, and started his career dead-heating on the flat at Liverpool, the scene of future triumphs. He became a racing legend as a result of his 3 victories and 2 seconds in the Grand National.
Although successful on park courses, Aintree brought out the best in him, and with his first victory in the race, he broke Golden Miller’s record for the race which had stood for 39 years. Trained on Southport Sands by Ginger McCain, Red Rum’s record in the Grand National has yet to be equalled.
