Owned by R Watt, trained by Richard Shepherd and ridden by William Scott, Memnon won the 1825 St Leger

William Scott was a British jockey who was born in 1797. Known as “Bill”, he was brother to the renowned horse trainer John Scott, who frequently conditioned horses that he rode. The two brothers could not have been more dissimilar. John was solid, steady and reliable. Bill, on the other hand, was highly strung, talkative, amusing and a great raconteur. Yet, despite being an excellent jockey, he had several riding accidents during his racing career.
