Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1938, Raymond Sipos is descended from a family of Hungarian musicians and violin makers. After studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in California, he worked as a mechanisms and optics engineer for Jet Propulsion Laboratory before becoming a full-time artist in 1972
