Danehill [1986 – 2003] was a champion stallion and one of the most important influences in thoroughbred breeding during recent years. In 1990, after a notable racecourse career he retired to stud duties at the Coolmore Stud in Ireland. He became a champion sire on both sides of the Equator. In Australia, he was nine times the leading sire, in Great Britain and Ireland he was three times the leading sire, and in France, he was twice the leading sire.

Danehill sired champions in every racing sphere, ranging from champion two-year-olds and sprinters to the outstanding long-distance performer Westerner. It is an indication of his growing influence that the 2006 Arc was won by one of his grandsons and the 2007 Arc was won by one of his sons.

During his phenomenal stud career, it is estimated that Danehill sired 1356 foals to race, of which 973 were winners. His progeny are estimated to have earned more than $206 million. Danehill’s total of 212 stakes winners is only two behind leader and fellow Coolmore stallion, Sadler’s Wells, and as such, Danehill is regarded as being at least equal to Sadler’s Wells.
