In 1973 Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first American Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Known as ‘Big Red’ Secretariat won 16 races, winning the Belmont Stakes by an incredible 31 lengths. He was twice American Horse of the Year and is recognized as one of the greatest horses in racing history. Owned and bred by the Chenery family and their Meadow Stable, Secretariat was trained by Lucien Laurin.
