Susan Crawford’s latest limited edition depicts the famous ‘race that never was’ between the two greatest flat horses of our time. In August 2000, Sheikh Mohammed, the owner of Dubai Millennium, challenged Michael Tabor, the owner of Montjeu, to an old-fashioned head-to-head match between the two superstar colts, with a purse of $6 million to the winner. However, before the great race could take place, Dubai Millennium suffered a career-ending injury in training at Newmarket and the eagerly anticipated match had to be abandoned. In her depiction of The Race that Never Was, Susan Crawford has painted Dubai Millennium, ridden by Frankie Dettori, and Montjeu, ridden by Mick Kinane, neck and neck a furlong from home. Who won? We’ll never know.
