The great Persian Punch, owned by Jeff Smith and trained by David Elsworth, won 20 of his 63 races, amassing a total prize fund of £1,008,785 during his career. So successful was he that the 11-year-old was honoured with the title “Racehorse of the Year” by readers of the industry newspaper, Racing Post, after his wonderful season in 2003. Persian Punch established his reputation on the basis of a courageous and front-running style, which brought him many notable triumphs, including three victories in the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket, two Goodwood Cups and three Henry II Stakes. He never won a Group One race, but he was second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in both 2001 and 2003. The remarkable feature of this strapping gelding was the way in which he maintained his form for so many years, competing with success over nine seasons. In his ten year old season alone, for example, he won the Doncaster Cup, the Goodwood Cup and the Jockey Club Cup, putting Classic winners and horses half his age firmly in their place. Sadly, Persian Punch died at Ascot in 2004. This commemorative print has therefore been published, part of the proceeds of which will benefit the various equestrian charities of Sir Peter OSullevan.
