Long Run’s victory in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, secured jockey Sam Waley-Cohen’s entry into the history books.
Starting the prestigious race as the 7-2 favourite, Long Run, the surprise winner of the King George VI Chase in January, ran superbly to fend off challenges from past winners 8-1 chance Denman and 5-1 Kauto Star.
Last years winner, Imperial Commander, pulled up early in the race with a ruptured blood vessel. The win was made all the more remarkable for being the first time in three decades that an amateur jockey has secured victory in the race.
