Susan Crawford was born in the Scottish district of East Lothian. Her father was a racehorse trainer and she grew up on the family farm.
She taught herself to paint but spent two years studying classical drawing in Florence under the eminient tuition of Signorini Nera Simi. Now renowned for her portraiture and her equestrian work, she has painted five members of the British Royal family, including mounted portraits of both HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales, as well as The Sultan of Brunei and HM The Sultan of Oman.

Susan Crawford has also painted 21 Derby winners and steeplechasing greats including Red Rum, Arkle and Desert Orchid
