The 1997 European Grand Prix at Jerez in Spain was the final race of a tight championship between German Michael Schumacher and Canadian Jacques Villeneuve. A passing manouvre by the Canadian ended in a collision which resulted in the retirement of Schumacher’s Ferrari. Jacques Villeneuve went on in his Williams to a third place which secured his 1997 World Championship
