On September 24th 2000 Formula One Grand Prix racing returned the United States – at the Indianopolis Motor Speedway – after a nine year absence. On the seventh lap, Michael Schumacher captured the lead with a daring outside pass of David Coulthard’s McLaren Mercedes, the pair touching briefly as they entered the damp left hander at the end of Indy’s famous front straight. Despite a late race spin, Schumacher survived to lead team-mate Rubens Barichello to a dramatic 1-2 victory for Scuderia Ferrari
