Rick Mears won the 1979 Indy 500 in the Penske PC6. Starting from pole, he led the race three times for a total of 25 laps. He crossed the finish line ahead of runner up A J Foyt to claim his first Indy 500 victory. Rick dominated Indy Car racing from the late 70’s to the early 90’s winning a total of 29 Indy Car races and 40 pole positions. At Indy, Rick started on the pole 6 times and won in 1979, 1984, 1988 and 1991. Rick won three Cart Indy World Series Championships and was named Driver of the Decade by the Associated Press
