The Dutch Grand Prix, Zandvoort, 27th August 1978
Ronnie Peterson shadows team leader Mario Andretti in their dominant ‘Black Beauty’ Lotus 79s. Andretti won the race for John Player Team Lotus in chassis 79/4 with Peterson just 0.3 seconds
adrift at the flag in 79/2; an emphatic victory and the last 1-2 for Team Lotus. Ronnie was a loyal
team mate, dutifully supporting number one driver Mario to his World Championship title and
helping to secure the Constructors’ title with his runner-up spot. The popular Swedish driver won
two 1978 Grands Prix to Andretti’s six and this race proved to be Andretti’s last F1 victory.
Tragically it was Peterson’s last finish, as disaster struck at the start of the next race, at Monza.
